Portrait of Grace Hopewell

I was commissioned by my friend Pat Hopewell to paint a picture of his daughter Grace. Although it’s a tall order to paint someone’s darling daughter, I eventually agreed to it. Grace is a wonderful child who I’d had quite a bit of transaction with since I’d been canoeing with her family often. Since she loves to be in the water it was obvious from the first that this should have an aquatic theme, and so I came up with this composition where she is riding a dolphin, or, as she put it when she first saw the painting, due to it’s bill, a “sea duck.”
