So Zeus was horny for Danae and her father, trying to avoid such drama, had her locked up in a chamber. But Zeus was persistent and was able to enter the chamber through a chink in the ceiling in the form of a golden shower, and mated with her like this. There's a long list of forms that Zeus took so that he could screw around with one girl or another: swan, bull, cloud, but this one is really getting weird. And, of course, that's the interest. You can do an internet search for "Danae" and find several old paintings of the theme but they're all so kind of demure, or something. (Although Klimt pulled off a pretty steamy one.) I just thought that someone needed to give Danae a more erotic treatment. I mean, for one thing it is one of the most ridiculous forms that anyone has ever been said to have taken for the sake of having sex, but even more basic than that: doesn't it just sound entirely fetishistic? A golden shower? Really. I'm not suggesting that pissing is what was necessarilly implied by the story, but isn't that what comes to mind? So here's this fetishistic, erotic, weirdo topic... why wouldn't you paint it?
