Andromeda

Perseus had to go fetch the head of Medusa the Gorgon, the sight of whom caused men to turn to stone. Using the reflection in his shield he accomplished the feat and was flying with his winged sandals back to Greece when he came upon Andromeda chained to a stone by the sea to be devoured by a monster. The situation with Andromeda was that her mother had bragged too much about her beauty until it angered Poseidon, who demanded that Andromeda should be made a victim to this monster as punishment. But, fortunately for Andromeda, Perseus came flying by at just the right time, showed the Gorgon's head to the monster, turning the monster into stone, and rescued Andromeda. All of that is interesting enough, but isn't what necessarilly interested me in the subject. An overlooked detail of the story is that Andromeda was Ethiopian.

Many paintings have been made of Andromeda and the monster, but none that I know of that shows Andromeda as being African. She's typically depicted as being white. And so I have fixed this, and have joked already that I fully expect to go down in history as the first painter to get this right. Although I may eventually stand corrected on this point, I don't think I know of another painting that shows the monster transitioning to stone either. It wasn't important to me to show Perseus. My interest was entirely in the figure of Andromeda.
