Buffalo: In Bloom

In 2005 I was very unsatisfied with my situation, as I’ve related in my commentary on “Dogfight.” I was living in Kansas City, MO, my father had died, and it was heavy on my mind to move back to Oklahoma to try to be some benefit to my mother.

Oklahoma has one of the largest herds of free-roaming American Bison in the nation, and when I had lived there I always enjoyed driving to the Wichita Mountain range to view the bison. Now, with my desire to move back to the area growing stronger all the time, I began to romanticize the southwest area in general. This buffalo, blooming with flowers, is, to me, a romantic vision of the things that I was now missing about the area in which I had spent my younger life. He is a idealized buffalo, and an idealized notion, to me, of my old southwest region.
